I interviewed a guy today from Somalia. He left his country for safety reasons and weren’t able to return. I was happy to learn that The United States are helping with peace efforts in Eastern Africa. I will call this guy Angel XY, to protect his identity. Here is a short Q&A. The rest of the interview is classified because it was a conversation that wasn’t supposed to happen.
What are your thoughts on the relations between East Africa and The United States?
The relationship between the countries is okay and The U.S. has been there for a while. They trained soldiers to stabilize our country.
How long have you lived in America? Do you like it here?
It is okay. I have lived in America for 17 years.
If you don’t mind me asking, how did you get here?
“I fled Somalia through Kenya and The U.S. helped me gain asylum.”
Do you have family here in America?
“My family is in Northern Africa and it’s not bad there.”
Awe, that’s nice. So do you think that you would ever get an opportunity to visit them?
I hope so. I really do.
Yeah, I have never been to Africa. I would love to visit someday as well. So, what are your thoughts on the relationships between African Americans and Africa?
I mean, we recognize them. We know that they exist.
In college, I have met few Africans who don’t like African Americans because we don’t practice African culture 100 percent. As an African American, I believe that we shouldn’t be ashamed of our other cultures we are tied too. Our heritage is diverse and should be able to acknowledge it. What are your thoughts?
Yeah. I believe that the relationships could improve. There is distance between the two though and that’s sad. I don’t know if it could be 100 percent, but that would be nice.
Well, I am grateful to have met you and be able to have this conversation.
Thanks. I am honored to have met you too. Take care.
